The total number of surgeries increased 31 percent from 1996 to 2006. Inpatient surgeries saw an increase of 26 percent while same-day surgeries increased 35 percent. The average ratio per hospital between inpatient and same-day surgeries shifted during the ten-year period. In 1996, the average hospital performed 70.4 percent of surgeries as same-day and 29.6 percent as inpatient. This ratio changed to 75.2 percent same-day and 24.8 percent inpatient by 2005.

The number of Minnesota acute care hospitals that provide onsite Computerized Tomography Scanning Services (CT Scans) by hospital staff increased from 71 in 1996 to 109 in 2005. The number of hospital CT Scans saw a 270 percent increase over the ten-year period.

The number of acute care hospitals that provide onsite Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging Services (MRI) by hospital staff increased as well. The number of MRIs performed at these hospitals increased 171 percent from 1996 to 2005.
