All of MHA's members are focused on a mission of meeting their communities' needs. Hospital financing is complicated by government-sponsored payments for services that are generally at or below what it costs hospitals to provide care. They must also address the care needs of those without health insurance. Hospitals also face a variety of cost pressures - including rising labor costs, emerging technology and drugs and physical plant upgrades to improve service delivery.
Rep. McCollum urges House subcommittee to protect hospital payments
In a July 17 letter, Rep. McCollum (D-Minn.) urged Rep. Pete Stark (D-CA), chairman, Subcommittee on Health, House Ways and Means Committee, to protect hospital payments when considering offsets for reauthorizing the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP).
While Rep. McCollum strongly supports reauthorization and expansion of SCHIP, she outlined her concern over the possibility of cutting hospital payments in order to pay for the improvements. See letter, [PDF]
