Quality & Patient Safety

Patient and Family Engagement

For hospitals, providing high quality, safe, patient-centered care is paramount. According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), studies show that providing patient-centered care has a positive impact on patient satisfaction, length of stay and cost per case. Across Minnesota, hospitals are engaging patients and their families as essential partners in efforts to continually improve the quality and safety of care in our hospitals.

Include AlwaysTM

The Include AlwaysTM initiative promotes partnering with patients and families in their care for better outcomes. Minnesota is a leader in patient and family engagement (PFE) and Minnesota ranks above the national average when compared to CMS’ Partnership for Patients PFE metrics. Our goal is for every hospital to have a PFE leader dedicated to implementing and sustaining a Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC). Visit the MHA Include Always webpage for resources hospitals can use to begin and sustain PFACs and other PFE activities.

In 2016, MHA awarded funding to the Minnesota Alliance for Patient Safety (MAPS) to develop a stand-alone resource-filled Include Always website for patients, families and health care providers across the continuum of care.

We invite MHA member hospitals to use the Include Always logos in their patient and family engagement programs. For more information, contact Joy Benn, quality and patient safety specialist, 651-659-1441.

Patient and Family Advisory Councils

A Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC) is a group of patients serving as advisors to hospitals at the organizational level. They are sometimes called Patient and Family Engagement Councils (PFEC) or Patient Partner Advisory Councils (PPAC). MHA has a goal for each of its member hospitals and health systems to partner with patients in an advisory group or to invite patients to join existing committees.

MHA has many resources available to support PFE leaders so they can successfully implement and sustain PFACs that improve the health care experience for patients, families, staff and hospitals.

Patient and Family Engagement Resources

If your organization would like to start a PFAC, work more effectively with your PFAC or add patients to hospital committees, MHA has resources to help.

PFE staff and patient partners are welcome to join monthly PFE webinars. The webinars provide an online community designed for shared learning and discussions around topics that are relevant to members and patients. The webinar schedule includes patient safety, antibiotic stewardship, care transitions, resiliency, health literacy, advance care planning and more. For more information on the PFE monthly webinars, contact Joy Benn, quality and patient safety specialist, 651-659-1441.
