Data & Reporting

performance matrix

Hospitals need information and insight to help understand and address operational needs. In 2018, MHA partnered with 3M to provide members with access to Performance Matrix, an online analytics platform that allows users to tap into the depth and power of Minnesota’s statewide administrative claims database.

In addition to traditional market share reports, Performance Matrix incorporates 3M’s methodologies for risk adjustment (APR-DRGs for inpatient cases and EAPGs for outpatient visits) and potentially preventable events. This allows users to benchmark their performance – as well as others’ – on mortality, length of stay, readmissions and much more.

As an added member benefit, there is no cost for MHA members who have contributed their data to the database to access the tool. There is also no limit on the number of users per organization. Multiple individuals at an organization can access the tool and not be dependent on a designated user to run reports for them. For example:

  • Finance professionals can use the tool to compare total charges and risk-adjusted average length of stay for specific types of cases against other facilities in their market
  • Clinical quality staff can identify improvement opportunities by looking at their risk-adjusted observed and expected rates of mortality, readmissions or complications
  • Strategic planners can look at trends of patient utilization by ZIP code, with enhanced data visualization tools like maps that bring the data to life for any audience

Data Miner

While the base functionality of Performance Matrix will help with most members’ high-level analytics needs, MHA also offers a subscription-based ad hoc reporting tool known as Data Miner. The cost of Data Miner will vary based on the size of the organization.
