Minnesota Republicans announce House and Senate committee chairs

Newly selected Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka (R-Nisswa) and House Speaker Kurt Daudt (R-Crown) on Nov. 22 announced committee leadership assignments for the 2017-18 biennium.

New this biennium is a Senate committee structure that eliminates subcommittees. The Senate also made changes to include both finance and policy responsibilities in two committees focusing on health and human services. In addition, the Senate announced a new committee that will address care for the elderly; the House will maintain its existing subcommittee that focuses on aging and long-term care.

The following committees may be of interest to MHA members:

Senate committees:

  • Aging and Long-Term Care Policy: Sen. Karin Housley (R-Stillwater)
  • Finance: Sen. Julie Rosen (R-Vernon Center)
  • Health and Human Services Finance and Policy: Sen. Michelle Benson (R-Ham Lake)
  • Human Services Reform Finance and Policy: Sen. Jim Abeler (R-Anoka)

House committees:

  • HHS Finance: Rep. Matt Dean (R-Dellwood)
  • HHS Reform: Rep. Joe Schomacker (R-Luverne)
  • Subcommittee on Aging and Long-Term Care: Rep. Deb Kiel (R-Crookston)

MHA encourages members to meet with their local legislators prior to the start of Minnesota’s 2017 legislative session on Jan. 3. Legislators appreciate hearing from constituents with personal expertise about health care issues and issues affecting their community’s hospital, and there will be a number of new legislators who may need to be oriented to health care and hospital issues. Resources to support legislative visits are available on the MHA Member Center, which is username and password protected. For login information, contact Ashley Beno, member services and communications specialist, MHA, 651-603-3545.
