River’s Edge Hospital & Clinic honored with MHA Best Minnesota Hospital Workplace Award

MHA on June 2 honored innovative programs and outstanding leaders in health care at its 33rd annual awards ceremony.

River’s Edge Hospital & Clinic in St. Peter received the Best Minnesota Hospital Workplace Award in the small hospital category, which recognizes hospitals that have gone the extra mile to strengthen employee engagement and satisfaction.

In recent years, leaders at River's Edge Hospital & Clinic have implemented a series of best practices to improve employee turnover, morale and, ultimately, patient satisfaction. These processes, along with monthly employee rounding, thank-you notes and employee engagement surveys, have helped River's Edge develop a culture of camaraderie and teamwork.

After seeing significant improvement overall, the hospital identified departments that needed additional coaching on retaining employees. An employee retention committee was formed, made up of the chief human resource officer and managers who were still experiencing high turnover in their departments.

Since starting the retention committee and implementing the new practices, two departments have stood out in decreasing turnover rates. In the lab, turnover was at 45 percent in 2015. It dropped to 12 percent in 2016 and is currently at 0 percent for 2017. The registration department experienced a 50 percent turnover rate in 2015. That improved to 10 percent in 2016 and is currently at 0 percent in 2017.

CMS CAH and EMTALA standards to be covered at upcoming MHA programs

Sue Dill Calloway, a nurse, attorney, health care consultant and one of MHA’s most popular speakers, will discuss updates to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Conditions of Participation (CoPs) for Critical Access Hospitals (CAH) and Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) guidelines at two upcoming MHA programs at the Crowne Plaza Minneapolis West in Plymouth.

On July 27, “Critical Access Hospital Conditions of Participation” will cover every section of the CAH hospital manual in detail and what to do when a surveyor arrives at your facility. Calloway will discuss recently rewritten sections including nursing, pharmacy and infection control and proposed changes to discharge planning standards and the Hospital Improvement Act. She will talk about challenging compliance issues such as nursing care plans, legibility requirements and necessary policies and procedures. View the brochure.

On July 28, “EMTALA Update 2017: Most Cited Deficiencies for Hospitals” will cover all the regulations and interpretive guidelines of EMTALA, along with common deficiencies. Calloway will discuss proposed changes by the Office of Inspector General, which will also impact on-call physicians, and CMS memos including three on Ebola and EMTALA. View the brochure.
