Minnesota hospital programs, leaders honored

MHA’s annual awards recognize patient safety, volunteerism, innovations in patient care, hospital excellence   The Minnesota Hospital Association (MHA) on June 1 honored innovative programs and outstanding leaders in health care at its 34th annual awards ceremony.   

Seventeen awards were given for extraordinary achievement in categories ranging from advocacy on behalf of hospitals and volunteerism to innovation and improvement in patient care and patient safety.   

“Each day, all across the state, Minnesota’s hospitals and health systems are working to strengthen the health of our communities,” said MHA President and CEO Lawrence Massa. “Our exceptional care teams set the bar high for patient care and for meeting the needs of their communities. Thanks to their expertise, diligence and commitment to excellence, Minnesota’s hospitals continue to be among the best in the nation.”

MHA to host June 13 webinar on opioid guidelines

MHA will host a webinar June 13 from 2-3:30 p.m. on Minnesota’s guidelines to help cut the risk of opioid addiction. These guidelines put in place consistent, statewide recommendations for all health care providers who prescribe opioids.    

The webinar will feature a presentation from Dr. Jeff Schiff, Minnesota Department of Human Services medical director, on both the clinical issues and the system processes needed to address the opioid crisis. Webinar participants will learn: 

  • How the guidelines advance Minnesota’s opioid efforts and relate to national opioid prescribing guidance 
  • Provider-level measures developed by DHS to support improvement across Minnesota 
  • How health care organizations can support the statewide quality improvement process that includes reporting of prescribing variation and outlier status 
  • Activities to support expansion of office-based treatment for opioid use disorder and best practices for neonatal opioid exposure

SAMHSA opioid treatment grant applications due July 9

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is now accepting applications for $196 million to treat opioid use disorder through its Targeted Capacity Expansion: Medication Assisted Treatment-Prescription Drug Opioid Addiction grant program.   

The new funding will expand access to medication-assisted treatment and recovery support services to people with opioid use disorder. By funding treatment in states with the greatest need for additional treatment resources, SAMHSA aims to reduce the number of deaths related to opioid use.   

Minnesota is among 35 states eligible to receive funding. Tribes and tribal organizations from anywhere in the U.S. are also eligible.

Learn about MHA’s new analytics platform at June 28 webinar

The third in a series of MHA webinars on the new 3M Performance Matrix analytics platform will be held on June 28 from 12-1 p.m. The platform is a new member benefit without cost for participating members to access the tool.   

To help members make the best use of the new capabilities, MHA is offering a series of webinars as opportunities to learn and ask questions. This webinar will explain the risk-adjustment classification system used on the platform, as well as the methodology for calculating Potentially Preventable Readmissions (PPRs). During the webinar, 3M experts will present and answer questions on the methodology.   

To submit a question in advance of the webinar, email [email protected]. Participants will also have the opportunity to ask questions during the live webinar.   

Future webinars will cover such topics as 3M Enhanced Ambulatory Patient Groups (EAPG), potentially preventable events and quality measures. Prior webinar recordings and other resources are available on the MHA website.

Submit CHAIN Award for Excellence nominations by Aug. 3

Nominations for the 2018 CHAIN Award for Excellence are now open. The award, presented by the Collaborative Healthcare-Associated Infections Network (CHAIN), commends the infection prevention and antibiotic stewardship efforts of health care teams working hard to build a safer overall health care environment.   

Award winners will be recognized on Sept. 26 at the CHAIN Fall Conference and invited to share brief presentations with their peers regarding their essential contributions to patient safety and quality of care.

GRHS names new president and CEO

The Glencoe Regional Health Services (GRHS) board of directors on May 21 approved the appointment of Jeffrey S. Mason, MBA, BSN, RN, FACHE, to become the organization’s next president and chief executive officer (CEO). Mason will start at GRHS on June 19. He succeeds Jon D. Braband, MHA, FACHE, who will retire July 5 after leading the nonprofit community health care system for the past 25 years.   

Mason brings nearly 30 years of administrative leadership experience to GRHS. He currently lives in Miami, Florida, where he has been CEO of The Miami Medical Center since June 2016. Learn more on the GRHS websitereturn to top
