spotlight: Mary Maertens, champion for health care
This past spring, MHA recognized Mary Maertens, regional
president and CEO of Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center, with the 2015
Spirit of Advocacy Award. Having a strong hospital presence at the state
legislature and before Congress is deeply dependent on strong participation and
advocacy by members. Mary Maertens is a champion for health care in Minnesota.
Mary began her career as a registered nurse and held a variety of nursing and
leadership roles before becoming the organization’s president and CEO in 2007.
Mary demonstrates her commitment to MHA by actively participating in committees
including Policy and Advocacy, Nurse Staffing and as chair of Minnesota
Hospitals: Strengthening Healthy Communities campaign steering committee. She
extends her knowledge and experience outside of Minnesota to generate
grassroots and community activity in support of the mission of our hospitals.

ensuring communities stand prepared for any emergency. MHA members are asked to
contribute hospital stories in these areas to be shared statewide and on social
media. In addition, please
